A Guide to Buying an Eco-Friendly Kitchen

A Guide to Buying an Eco-Friendly Kitchen | KDCUK

If you want an eco-friendly kitchen but don’t want to compromise on style and quality, don’t worry! It’s perfectly possible to have both – and it won’t cost the earth. More and more kitchen manufacturers are using eco-friendly kitchen materials and packaging and are initiating sustainability practices in terms of transport and minimising their carbon footprint. So your eco-friendly kitchen begins by looking for a sustainable kitchen manufacturer such as Schüller. By creating your new kitchen using sustainable units and kitchen furniture, you’ll have the peace of mind that your kitchen is environmentally friendly.

Why is Schüller So Eco-Friendly?

All the wood and wood-based materials that go into the manufacturing of Schüller products are certified to PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) standards – the world’s largest forest certification scheme. This means that it is all sourced from recognised sustainably managed forests.

Schüller also has DGM (Deutsche Gütegemeinschaft Möbel) certification for being carbon neutral – also known as the much-coveted ‘Golden M’. DGM will only issue certification to companies that meet strict criteria with regard to quality, emission and environmental standards.

The company has also been awarded a variety of certifications for a number of other environmental initiatives:

  • The company has been investing in an increasingly eco-friendly and fuel-saving fleet of trucks in which to transport its kitchens across Europe.
  • Schüller’s entire premises are heated using the scrap wood that’s created by the production of kitchen units. The waste is thermally cleaned making it an eco-friendly form of heating as well as providing an economical solution to utility bills.
  • Schüller finishes its units with a water-based lacquer that is solvent-free and low-emission – and gives a high-quality and long-lasting finish.
  • Using a partner company, Recycling Kontor Transportverpackungen (RKT), Schüller ensures that all the packaging used to protect units when they’re being transported is not only made sustainably but also collected and recycled. The company has also identified and reduced unnecessary packing.

Why are Nobilia Kitchens Eco-Friendly?

Nobilia produces high-quality but affordable kitchen solutions, which offer superb value if you’re on a budget – similar in price to Wren. But there’s no reason why lower-priced kitchen furniture can’t also be eco-friendly, and Nobilia has a number of environmental credentials:

  • The company is certified by the German environmental seal known as the Blue Angel (Der Blaue Engel), which “sets high standards for environmentally friendly product design”. The Blue Angel logo on a product is a reliable indication for shoppers that the product is eco-friendly. It began in Germany but is now being rolled out worldwide and is recognised globally. To get Blue Angel certification, companies must meet a variety of criteria including energy efficiency and well-managed resources.
  • Nobilia products are PEFC certified which ensures that all the timber used is sourced from sustainably managed forests.
  • All the company’s carbon emissions are offset when it comes to transportation, and like Schüller, it has DGM carbon-neutral certification.
  • It also partners with RKT which collects and recycles all of its packagings.
